Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preserved swine meat exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

South Africa prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 96% of total exports in 2021. Namibia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -15.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Namibia (+29.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +29.8% from 2012-2021. Namibia (+3.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -2.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest preserved swine meat supplier in Africa, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 6.5% share of total exports.

In South Africa, preserved swine meat exports contracted by an average annual rate of -10.5% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +6.2%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while South Africa amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+6.0%).

In 2021, supplies from abroad of prepared or preserved hams and cuts of swine meat increased by 80% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a slight descent. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

The purchases of the three major importers of prepared or preserved hams and cuts of swine meat, namely Angola, Cabo Verde and Lesotho, represented more than third of total import. Gabon (X tons) took a 7% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Namibia (7%). South Africa (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Congo (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Madagascar (X tons) and Benin (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Cabo Verde (with a CAGR of +23.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest preserved swine meat importing markets in Africa were Angola ($X), Cabo Verde ($X) and Morocco ($X), together accounting for 30% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Cabo Verde, with a CAGR of +21.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -8% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the import price increased by 16%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
