The African preserved turkey market totaled $X in 2021, with an increase of 2.2% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Exports in Africa

In 2021, exports of prepared or preserved meat or offal of turkeys in Africa contracted rapidly to X tons, waning by -37.7% compared with the year before. In general, exports saw a slight decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

In value terms, preserved turkey exports shrank sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 70% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Morocco prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 80% of total exports in 2021. Tunisia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 7.5% share, followed by Ethiopia (6.1%). The following exporters - Kenya (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) - each finished at a 3.9% share of total exports.

Exports from Morocco increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ethiopia (+161.4%) and Kenya (+66.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ethiopia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +161.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tunisia (-4.4%) and Egypt (-11.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+17 p.p.), Ethiopia (+6.1 p.p.) and Kenya (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tunisia and Egypt saw its share reduced by -2.5% and -3.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest preserved turkey supplier in Africa, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Ethiopia, with an 8.6% share.

In Morocco, preserved turkey exports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (-3.5% per year) and Ethiopia (+92.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -6.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+6.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of prepared or preserved meat or offal of turkeys increased by 37% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

In value terms, preserved turkey imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +81.3% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Equatorial Guinea (X tons), Mayotte (X tons), Gabon (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons), Togo (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Benin (X tons) represented roughly 70% of total imports in 2021. Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Morocco (with a CAGR of +118.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest preserved turkey importing markets in Africa were Mayotte ($X), Equatorial Guinea ($X) and Gabon ($X), together comprising 30% of total imports. These countries were followed by Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Cabo Verde, Togo, Guinea, Morocco, Benin, Angola, Senegal and Swaziland, which together accounted for a further 40%.

Among the main importing countries, Morocco, with a CAGR of +96.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 15% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mayotte ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
