Tanzania (+3.5 p.p.) and Cameroon (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest prepared birds skin supplier in Africa, comprising 100% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cameroon ($X), with a 0.4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +10.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cameroon (+23.0% per year) and Tanzania (+13.4% per year).

In 2022, the amount of prepared skins of birds imported in Africa soared to X tons, increasing by 125% on 2021 figures. In general, imports saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 132% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, prepared birds skin imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a pronounced expansion. Morocco represented the key importer of prepared skins of birds in Africa, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 61% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Somalia (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Botswana (X tons), together constituting a 27% share of total imports. Tunisia (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Morocco was also the fastest-growing in terms of the prepared skins of birds imports, with a CAGR of +42.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tunisia (+17.1%), Botswana (+15.9%), Nigeria (+9.7%) and Somalia (+8.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Africa (-14.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+58 p.p.), Somalia (+3.7 p.p.), Botswana (+3.1 p.p.) and Tunisia (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -43.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported prepared skins of birds in Africa, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Morocco stood at +37.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tunisia (+9.7% per year) and South Africa (-8.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -29.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 57%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
