As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, preserved asparagus exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 272% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Ethiopia represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 50% of total exports. Namibia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Madagascar (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 48% share of total exports. South Africa (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Namibia (with a CAGR of +139.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest preserved asparagus supplying countries in Africa were Namibia ($X), Madagascar ($X) and Ethiopia ($X), together accounting for 99% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Namibia, with a CAGR of +158.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -20.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 94% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Ethiopia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, purchases abroad of preserved asparagus decreased by -13.9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, preserved asparagus imports fell slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports faced a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. South Africa represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 49% of total imports. Mayotte (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mauritius (7.6%) and Angola (4.6%). Morocco (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Swaziland (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -13.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Senegal (+30.6%), Mayotte (+16.8%) and Algeria (+12.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +30.6% from 2012-2022. Swaziland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mauritius (-4.9%), Angola (-6.9%), Namibia (-11.5%) and Morocco (-14.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mayotte (+14 p.p.), Mauritius (+3.5 p.p.), Algeria (+3.3 p.p.), Senegal (+2.1 p.p.), Swaziland (+1.6 p.p.) and Angola (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Morocco and South Africa saw its share reduced by -2.5% and -18.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported preserved asparagus in Africa, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 4.5% share.

In South Africa, preserved asparagus imports plunged by an average annual rate of -12.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (-7.8% per year) and Morocco (-11.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 10% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.
