The African preserved tomato market rose slightly to $X in 2021, increasing by 3.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a remarkable increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of preserved tomatoes, when their volume increased by 32% to X tons. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, preserved tomato exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded buoyant growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Morocco (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) represented roughly 82% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), creating a 12% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Tunisia (with a CAGR of +15.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest preserved tomato supplier in Africa, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Morocco amounted to +13.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+15.9% per year) and South Africa (-4.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 22% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of preserved tomatoes were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 12%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preserved tomato imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons) and Gabon (X tons) were the largest importers of preserved tomatoes, together comprising 68% of total imports. Mayotte (X tons), Equatorial Guinea (X tons), Angola (X tons), Congo (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Gabon (with a CAGR of +11.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Gabon ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 65% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Gabon, with a CAGR of +13.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 24% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Gabon ($X per ton) and Equatorial Guinea ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) and Mauritius ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+9.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
