In value terms, canned vegetable production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 37%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of canned vegetables increased by 5.4% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +9.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 37%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, canned vegetable exports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Morocco was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 43% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) took a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kenya (15%), South Africa (11%) and Tunisia (5.3%). Madagascar (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to canned vegetable exports from Morocco stood at +4.8%. At the same time, Tunisia (+20.9%), Madagascar (+12.6%), Egypt (+8.4%), Kenya (+8.0%) and Cameroon (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +20.9% from 2012-2022. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tunisia, Egypt, Kenya and Madagascar increased by +3.9, +3.8, +2.9 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Morocco ($X), Egypt ($X) and South Africa ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 71% share of total exports. Kenya, Madagascar, Tunisia and Cameroon lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.
Tunisia, with a CAGR of +16.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 3.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of canned vegetables increased by 10% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after four years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, canned vegetable imports soared to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 22%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Nigeria (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Libya (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Angola (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Gabon (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) represented roughly 74% of total imports in 2022. Algeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Mali (with a CAGR of +20.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Libya ($X), Nigeria ($X) and South Africa ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 32% of total imports. Morocco, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal, Botswana, Gabon, Angola, Mauritius, Namibia, Mali and Algeria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.
Mali, with a CAGR of +21.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 8.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 10%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
