Market Size for Primary Cells and Batteries in Africa

For the third consecutive year, the African primary cell and battery market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 0.1% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +85.7% against 2017 indices. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Production of Primary Cells and Batteries in Africa

In value terms, primary cell and battery production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 150%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, exports of primary cells and batteries in Africa soared to X units, increasing by 35% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, primary cell and battery exports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 20%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Rwanda (X units) and Egypt (X units) dominates exports structure, together making up 76% of total exports. Mali (X units) took the next position in the ranking, followed by South Africa (X units). All these countries together held approx. 15% share of total exports. Togo (X units) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Rwanda (with a CAGR of +86.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Rwanda ($X) and Egypt ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 79% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Rwanda, with a CAGR of +71.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, reducing by -22.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Egypt ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+13.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports of Primary Cells and Batteries

Imports in Africa

Primary cell and battery imports soared to X units in 2022, picking up by 15% compared with 2021 figures. Total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +123.0% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 29%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, primary cell and battery imports totaled $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 8% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the twelve major importers of primary cells and batteries, namely Ghana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Somalia, Uganda, Guinea, Djibouti, Egypt, Madagascar, Algeria, Sudan and Lesotho, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Sierra Leone (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Algeria (with a CAGR of +33.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest primary cell and battery importing markets in Africa were Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), Sudan ($X) and Ghana ($X), together comprising 21% of total imports. Kenya, Egypt, Djibouti, Guinea, Algeria, Somalia, Madagascar, Uganda, Sierra Leone and Lesotho lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

Djibouti, with a CAGR of +26.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, which is down by -7.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 31% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sudan ($X per unit), while Lesotho (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lesotho (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
