In value terms, printing ink production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 18%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, approx. X tons of printing ink were exported in Africa; which is down by -10.5% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, printing ink exports rose modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 36%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 62% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kenya (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together constituting a 33% share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -2.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kenya (+6.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +6.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-1.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kenya increased by +9.5 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest printing ink supplier in Africa, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 9.8% share of total exports.
In South Africa, printing ink exports declined by an average annual rate of -3.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kenya (+7.5% per year) and Egypt (+1.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 16% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a slight descent. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Printing Ink Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2022, printing ink imports in Africa dropped modestly to X tons, stabilizing at the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
In value terms, printing ink imports reached $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 14%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Algeria (X tons), Egypt (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) represented roughly 62% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), comprising a 5.6% share of total imports. Ghana (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Angola (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +15.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Algeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 53% of total imports. Morocco, Nigeria, Kenya, Tunisia, Cote d'Ivoire, Angola, Ghana, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Uganda lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.
Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +9.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 4.6% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
