Printing Press Market Size in Africa

In 2022, the African printing press market increased by 7.5% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, printing press production dropped remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 1,038%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, overseas shipments of printing presses increased by 25% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, printing press exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a noticeable reduction. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, reaching X units, which was near 76% of total exports in 2022. Burundi (X units), Nigeria (X units), Kenya (X units), Mauritius (X units) and Tunisia (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of printing presses. At the same time, Burundi (+83.2%), Kenya (+11.4%), Tunisia (+9.2%) and Nigeria (+9.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burundi emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +83.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mauritius (-9.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Burundi (+3.8 p.p.), Nigeria (+2.1 p.p.) and Kenya (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Mauritius saw its share reduced by -5.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest printing press supplier in Africa, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 5.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 3.4% share.

In South Africa, printing press exports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+3.4% per year) and Kenya (+3.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Burundi ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (-2.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, purchases abroad of printing presses increased by 16% to X units for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 71%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, printing press imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the main importer of printing presses in Africa, with the volume of imports reaching X units, which was near 41% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X units) and Egypt (X units), together making up a 20% share of total imports. Nigeria (X units), Botswana (X units), Mauritius (X units), Burundi (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Senegal (X units), Kenya (X units) and Ghana (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+23.7%), Mozambique (+7.9%), Senegal (+7.3%), Ghana (+5.9%), Mauritius (+3.8%), Nigeria (+3.1%) and Kenya (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +23.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Burundi (-3.9%), Botswana (-7.9%) and Egypt (-18.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+21 p.p.), Mozambique (+8.2 p.p.), Nigeria (+2.2 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.1 p.p.) and Mauritius (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Botswana (-1.8 p.p.) and Egypt (-35.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Egypt ($X) and South Africa ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 37% of total imports. Kenya, Ghana, Senegal, Mauritius, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Botswana and Burundi lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.

Among the main importing countries, Senegal, with a CAGR of +6.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -21.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 111%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
