The African non-rolled bitumen products market shrank to $X in 2022, waning by -3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the amount of non-rolled bitumen products exported in Africa reduced to X tons, declining by -7.4% against 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 195%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-rolled bitumen products exports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed temperate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 135% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Egypt dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 91% of total exports in 2022. South Africa (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-rolled bitumen products exports from Egypt stood at +13.8%. At the same time, Senegal (+65.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +65.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-21.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Egypt and Senegal increased by +63 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest non-rolled bitumen products supplier in Africa, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.

In Egypt, non-rolled bitumen products exports expanded at an average annual rate of +13.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-10.1% per year) and Senegal (+75.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Export price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, non-rolled bitumen products export price increased by +118.8% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 80%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+14.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Non-rolled bitumen products imports fell to X tons in 2022, waning by -9.4% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports saw a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-rolled bitumen products imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Tanzania (X tons), followed by Nigeria (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) represented the largest importers of non-rolled bitumen products, together mixing up 59% of total imports. South Africa (X tons), Libya (X tons), Togo (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Liberia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Cameroon (with a CAGR of +30.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest non-rolled bitumen products importing markets in Africa were Kenya ($X), Cameroon ($X) and Ghana ($X), with a combined 23% share of total imports. Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, Tanzania, South Africa, Libya, Nigeria, Liberia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Togo and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 43%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Togo, with a CAGR of +23.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Liberia ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
