Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 59%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, propyl and isopropyl alcohol imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a tangible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 91%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Nigeria was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 36% of total imports. Kenya (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Egypt (9.5%) and Ghana (7.1%). Tunisia (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and Angola (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to propyl and isopropyl alcohol imports into Nigeria stood at +4.6%. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+23.5%), Algeria (+21.5%), Uganda (+12.5%), Cote d'Ivoire (+6.4%), Tanzania (+4.5%), Ghana (+3.5%), Kenya (+3.1%) and Angola (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +23.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tunisia (-2.7%), Egypt (-2.7%) and Morocco (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+6.7 p.p.), Algeria (+3.2 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt saw its share reduced by -1.8%, -2.8% and -6.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported propan-1-ol (propyl alcohol) and propan-2-ol (isopropyl alcohol) in Africa, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 9.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria totaled +3.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (-2.1% per year) and Kenya (+2.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 20%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
