In 2021, the African propellant powders market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, propellant powders exports shrank sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports faced a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 165%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Swaziland (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) were the largest exporters of propellant powders, together committing 94% of total exports. The following exporters - Zambia (X kg), Namibia (X kg) and Kenya (X kg) - each resulted at a 6.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Swaziland (with a CAGR of +44.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Swaziland ($X) and Egypt ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 82% share of total exports.

Swaziland, with a CAGR of +51.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 81% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 131% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+18.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

For the fourth year in a row, Africa recorded growth in supplies from abroad of propellant powders, which increased by 16% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, propellant powders imports stood at $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 40%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Algeria dominates imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 82% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Cameroon (X tons), mixing up a 7% share of total imports. Sudan (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Algeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the propellant powders imports, with a CAGR of +62.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cameroon (+38.3%), Ethiopia (+14.0%) and South Africa (+6.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Sudan (-17.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Algeria and Cameroon increased by +78 and +5.8 percentage points, respectively. In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -13.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 45%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
