Sliding Pencil Market Size in Africa
After two years of growth, the African sliding pencil market decreased by -15.2% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then plummeted in the following year.
Sliding Pencil Production in Africa
In value terms, sliding pencil production reduced remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 46%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of propelling or sliding pencils decreased by -38.3% to X units, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports faced a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sliding pencil exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X units), making up a 4.9% share of total exports. The following exporters - Uganda (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) - each resulted at a 3.7% share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -10.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uganda (+31.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +31.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Democratic Republic of the Congo (-5.3%) and Tunisia (-30.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+31 p.p.) and Uganda (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tunisia saw its share reduced by -26.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest sliding pencil supplier in Africa, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 4% share of total exports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 2.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -4.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (-26.0% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+3.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 27% against the previous year. Export price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, sliding pencil export price decreased by -10.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 32%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit), while Uganda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (+9.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sliding Pencil Imports
Imports in Africa
For the fifth year in a row, Africa recorded decline in supplies from abroad of propelling or sliding pencils, which decreased by -25.1% to X units in 2021. In general, imports saw a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sliding pencil imports declined significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X units) represented the major importer of propelling or sliding pencils, creating 45% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Angola (X units) and Swaziland (X units), together constituting a 23% share of total imports. Egypt (X units), Tunisia (X units), Ghana (X units), Togo (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Morocco (X units) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sliding pencil imports into South Africa stood at -5.3%. At the same time, Ghana (+41.8%), Swaziland (+14.7%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+8.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +41.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Angola (-2.4%), Morocco (-9.2%), Togo (-10.3%), Tunisia (-25.8%) and Egypt (-31.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+26 p.p.), Angola (+12 p.p.), Swaziland (+5.5 p.p.) and Ghana (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Tunisia (-11.8 p.p.) and Egypt (-29.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Angola ($X) and Egypt ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 73% share of total imports. Tunisia, Morocco, Swaziland, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.
Ghana, with a CAGR of +8.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, growing by 3.5% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per unit), while Swaziland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+12.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
