The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, propylene glycol imports stood at $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 103% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In 2022, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) were the main importers of propylene glycol (propane-1,2-diol), together creating 73% of total imports. Morocco (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Togo (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +13.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Nigeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 60% share of total imports. Algeria, Morocco, Cote d'Ivoire, Togo, Senegal, Kenya, Tunisia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana and Cameroon lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.

Algeria, with a CAGR of +12.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 20% against the previous year. Import price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, propylene glycol import price increased by +79.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
