The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 55%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, exports of protein concentrates and flavoured or coloured sugar syrups surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +79.9% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+95.6%) and Malawi (+37.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +95.6% from 2012-2021. South Africa (+24 p.p.), Malawi (+4.4 p.p.) and Nigeria (+4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest protein concentrate and flavoured or coloured sugar syrup supplier in Africa, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 2.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +4.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nigeria (+64.4% per year) and Malawi (+28.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 16% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 28%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Malawi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
Imports of protein concentrates and flavoured or coloured sugar syrups fell to X tons in 2021, waning by -5.7% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 17%. Over the period under review, imports of reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, imports of protein concentrates and flavoured or coloured sugar syrups reduced slightly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +15.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 28%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Malawi (X tons), Niger (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) represented the main importers of protein concentrates and flavoured or coloured sugar syrups, together generating 61% of total imports. Zambia (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Somalia (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Somalia (with a CAGR of +64.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Niger ($X) and Zimbabwe ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 34% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Senegal, Algeria, Egypt, Sudan, Zambia, Malawi, Somalia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Namibia and Nigeria, which together accounted for a further 43%.
Senegal, with a CAGR of +58.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 1.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Malawi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (+15.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
