The African market for pulp from fibres other than wood totaled $X in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, consumption saw a slight decrease. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, exports of pulp from fibres other than wood contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, faced a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 126% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports of failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Namibia represented the key exporter of pulp from fibres other than wood in Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 59% of total exports in 2022. Zimbabwe (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Swaziland (7.6%) and Tunisia (6.1%). Egypt (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Namibia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the pulp from fibres other than wood exports, with a CAGR of +124.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Swaziland (+123.6%) and Egypt (+10.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-3.8%), South Africa (-13.0%), Tunisia (-19.8%) and Tanzania (-21.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, Namibia ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Egypt ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 61% of total exports. Tanzania, Swaziland, South Africa and Zimbabwe lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.

Swaziland, with a CAGR of +101.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -39.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 172% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+5.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, purchases abroad of pulp from fibres other than wood decreased by -12.4% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, imports of pulp from fibres other than wood fell significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a perceptible increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 59%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the major importer of pulp from fibres other than wood, creating 37% of total imports. Nigeria (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Ethiopia (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Togo (X tons). All these countries together held near 47% share of total imports. Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +46.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest pulp from fibres other than wood importing markets in Africa were Nigeria ($X), South Africa ($X) and Ethiopia ($X), together accounting for 69% of total imports. Morocco, Egypt, Guinea and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Guinea, with a CAGR of +39.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
