Pumpkin Market Size in Africa
The African pumpkin market expanded modestly to $X in 2022, surging by 3.1% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Pumpkin Production in Africa
In value terms, pumpkin production rose remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 34%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Malawi (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), with a combined 44% share of total production. South Africa, Rwanda, Niger, Morocco and Cameroon lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Niger (with a CAGR of +23.8%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2022, the average pumpkin yield in Africa contracted slightly to X tons per ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the yield increased by 3.1%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha, and then contracted slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of pumpkin (squash and gourds) production in Africa contracted modestly to X ha, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 6.3%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa
Pumpkin exports reduced to X tons in 2022, approximately equating the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 181% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, pumpkin exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 137%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Morocco was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 58% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), constituting a 32% share of total exports. The following exporters - Egypt (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - each finished at a 4.9% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +112.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest pumpkin supplier in Africa, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 2.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Morocco stood at +10.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+11.0% per year) and Egypt (+130.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 6.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+9.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Pumpkin imports was estimated at X tons in 2022, surging by 5.5% on 2021. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -4.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, pumpkin imports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -17.9% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) represented roughly 43% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Libya (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons), together making up a 39% share of total imports. Lesotho (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tunisia (with a CAGR of +41.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Libya ($X) and Botswana ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 46% share of total imports. Tunisia, Swaziland, Mauritania and Lesotho lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.
Tunisia, with a CAGR of +44.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -5.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lesotho ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
