Pyrethrum And Peppermint Market Size in Africa

In 2022, the African pyrethrum and peppermint market increased by 8% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, showed a noticeable slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 9.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa

For the fifth consecutive year, Africa recorded growth in shipments abroad of pyrethrum and peppermint, which increased by 1% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +34.7% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, pyrethrum and peppermint exports contracted to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +69.3% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 45%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports by Country

Egypt was the largest exporter of pyrethrum and peppermint in Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 44% of total exports in 2022. Morocco (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 17% share, followed by Nigeria (11%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (4.7%) and Tunisia (4.6%). The following exporters - Sudan (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) - together made up 7% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pyrethrum and peppermint exports from Egypt stood at +6.1%. At the same time, Nigeria (+51.8%), Tunisia (+18.3%), Sudan (+7.8%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+7.4%), Morocco (+5.8%) and Kenya (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +51.8% from 2012-2022. While the share of Nigeria (+11 p.p.) and Tunisia (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Kenya (-1.5 p.p.), Morocco (-2 p.p.) and Egypt (-3.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest pyrethrum and peppermint supplier in Africa, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 7.8% share.

In Egypt, pyrethrum and peppermint exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+8.3% per year) and Kenya (-0.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -8.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sudan (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Pyrethrum And Peppermint Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of pyrethrum and peppermint were imported in Africa; falling by -2.2% on the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pyrethrum and peppermint imports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +68.1% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Egypt (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) represented roughly 49% of total imports in 2022. Madagascar (X tons) held a 6.4% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Algeria (5.9%), Sudan (5.5%) and South Africa (4.9%). Libya (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Rwanda (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Benin (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +42.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), Egypt ($X) and Kenya ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 50% of total imports.

Kenya, with a CAGR of +35.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 14%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
