South Africa dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2022. Morocco (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Namibia (X tons). All these countries together held near 9.2% share of total exports. Madagascar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +27.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Namibia (+108.6%), Madagascar (+36.0%) and Morocco (+9.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +108.6% from 2012-2022. South Africa (+51 p.p.), Namibia (+4.5 p.p.) and Madagascar (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Morocco saw its share reduced by -4.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest pyrites supplier in Africa, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 10% share.

In South Africa, pyrites exports increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+7.9% per year) and Namibia (+60.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -74.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 41%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, overseas purchases of pyrites decreased by -46.4% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 190% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pyrites imports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed measured growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 180% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) were the main importers of pyrites in Africa, together generating 66% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together achieving a 15% share of total imports. Niger (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Niger (with a CAGR of +41.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pyrites in Africa, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Algeria ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +7.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Algeria (+21.0% per year) and Egypt (+17.2% per year).

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
