Quince Market Size in Africa
The African quince market rose remarkably to $X in 2022, picking up by 5.1% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Quince Production in Africa
In value terms, quince production rose markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 331% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of quince production was Morocco (X tons), comprising approx. 79% of total volume. Moreover, quince production in Morocco exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Algeria (X tons), sixfold.
In Morocco, quince production increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Algeria (-0.4% per year) and Tunisia (+3.0% per year).
In 2022, the average quince yield in Africa shrank modestly to X tons per ha, almost unchanged from the year before. The yield indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, quince yield increased by +118.6% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the yield increased by 37%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of quinces were harvested in Africa; surging by 6.5% compared with 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area, however, showed a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 35% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the quince harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Quince Exports
Exports in Africa
In 2022, shipments abroad of quinces increased by 97% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 138% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, quince exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 148% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2022. Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -6.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Egypt (+27.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +27.1% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Egypt increased by +2.8 percentage points.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest quince supplier in Africa, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 3.5% share of total exports.
In South Africa, quince exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -41.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by 53% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while South Africa totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+7.2%).
Quince Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2022, supplies from abroad of quinces increased by 52% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, imports, however, recorded a perceptible decline. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, quince imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible decrease. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Egypt (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) dominates imports structure, together generating 84% of total imports. The following importers - Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) - together made up 6.1% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Uganda (with a CAGR of +35.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported quinces in Africa, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, with a 6.8% share.
In Egypt, quince imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kenya (-16.8% per year) and Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (-50.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 44% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+6.4%).
