Rabbit Meat Market Size in Africa

The African rabbit meat market stood at $X in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. The average rabbit meat yield shrank modestly to X kg per head in 2022, standing approx. at 2021. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 8.8% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X kg per head; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

This number increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the number of producing animals increased by 7.6% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, rabbit meat exports declined sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 608%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of rabbit or hare meat increased by 5.1% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 42%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, rabbit meat imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 30%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Gabon (X tons), distantly followed by Equatorial Guinea (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Benin (X tons), Mali (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Angola (X tons) were the main importers of rabbit or hare meat, together making up 78% of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Niger (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
