Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, railway track fixture exports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 138% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 81% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Benin (X tons), making up an 8.6% share of total exports. Morocco (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to railway track fixture exports from South Africa stood at -2.8%. At the same time, Tunisia (+41.0%), Kenya (+37.5%), Morocco (+25.8%) and Benin (+21.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +41.0% from 2012-2021. Benin (+7.3 p.p.), Morocco (+3.7 p.p.), Tunisia (+2.2 p.p.) and Kenya (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -10.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest railway track fixture supplier in Africa, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 7.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Benin, with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to +6.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+21.1% per year) and Benin (+17.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 48%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+9.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, the amount of railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings imported in Africa skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 19% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports posted a measured expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 684% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, railway track fixture imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate tangible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 62%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Algeria (X tons), distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) represented the largest importers of railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings, together generating 78% of total imports. From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Guinea (with a CAGR of +64.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest railway track fixture importing markets in Africa were Algeria ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Egypt ($X), together accounting for 43% of total imports. Nigeria, Mozambique, Tunisia, Morocco, Cameroon, Kenya, Guinea, South Africa, Ghana and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 50%.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 3.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 610% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Guinea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
