After two years of growth, the African rape and colza seed market decreased by -10.1% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. In 2022, the average yield of rape or colza seed in Africa was estimated at X tons per ha, rising by 4.9% on the year before. In general, the yield, however, saw a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the yield increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the rape and colza seed yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of rape or colza seed were harvested in Africa; dropping by -12.1% on the year before. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 39%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to rape and colza seed production attained the maximum at X ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in overseas shipments of rape or colza seed, when their volume decreased by -1.8% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 1,915%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell slightly in the following year.

In value terms, rape and colza seed exports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 3,080%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 95% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Tanzania (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) - each resulted at a 4.6% share of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the rape or colza seed exports, with a CAGR of +155.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tanzania (+6.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Mozambique (-13.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa and Mozambique increased by +95 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest rape and colza seed supplier in Africa, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 2% share of total exports.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (-11.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, imports of rape or colza seed in Africa soared to X tons, with an increase of 23% on 2021. In general, imports recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 84%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, rape and colza seed imports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 432%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Algeria dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 85% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), creating a 5.2% share of total imports. Morocco (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to rape and colza seed imports into Algeria stood at +56.4%. At the same time, Morocco (+118.3%), Tunisia (+47.0%), South Africa (+31.4%) and Egypt (+6.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +118.3% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Algeria and Morocco increased by +74 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Algeria ($X) and Tunisia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 92% share of total imports. Morocco and Egypt lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 1.9%.

Morocco, with a CAGR of +91.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -16.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 320%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
