The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 28% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the amount of rare gases (excluding argon) exported in Africa declined rapidly to X cubic meters, reducing by -23.2% compared with 2021. Total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +48.5% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X cubic meters in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.

In value terms, rare gases exports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 64%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of rare gases (excluding argon), namely Algeria, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Algeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the rare gases (excluding argon) exports, with a CAGR of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022. Algeria (+5.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Algeria ($X) also remains the largest rare gases supplier in Africa.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, rising by 3.7% against the previous year. Export price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, rare gases export price increased by +59.9% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Algeria.

In 2022, rare gases imports in Africa surged to X cubic meters, growing by 969% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Rwanda prevails in imports structure, recording X cubic meters, which was near 91% of total imports in 2022. South Africa (X cubic meters) held a minor share of total imports.

Rwanda was also the fastest-growing in terms of the rare gases (excluding argon) imports, with a CAGR of +83.3% from 2012 to 2022. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Rwanda increased by +91 percentage points.

In value terms, Rwanda ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported rare gases (excluding argon) in Africa, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 19% share of total imports.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 114%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per cubic meter in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per cubic meter), while Rwanda amounted to $X per cubic meter.
