From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.
Morocco (X tons) remains the largest raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry producing country in Africa, comprising approx. 75% of total volume. Moreover, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry production in Morocco exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, South Africa (X tons), fourfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Morocco amounted to +3.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+6.1% per year) and Zimbabwe (+41.0% per year).

The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. As a result, the yield reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries were harvested in Africa; which is down by -5.5% against the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Exports in Africa
For the eleventh consecutive year, Africa recorded growth in shipments abroad of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries, which increased by 28% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 47% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry exports expanded to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Morocco was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 76% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), creating a 20% share of total exports. Zimbabwe (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Morocco increased at an average annual rate of +35.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+88.7%) and South Africa (+27.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +88.7% from 2012-2022. While the share of Morocco (+12 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-11.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry supplier in Africa, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 22% share of total exports.
In Morocco, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry exports increased at an average annual rate of +37.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+23.2% per year) and Zimbabwe (+73.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -19.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a slight contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 7.7% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, purchases abroad of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 275% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
In value terms, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 113% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
South Africa prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 64% of total imports in 2022. Mauritius (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Botswana (X tons). All these countries together held near 16% share of total imports. Namibia (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Somalia (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +23.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nigeria (+100.3%), Somalia (+97.7%), Mauritius (+36.6%), Cote d'Ivoire (+21.5%), Mozambique (+20.6%), Namibia (+18.2%) and Botswana (+16.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +100.3% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Mauritius, Nigeria and Somalia increased by +21, +7, +3.2 and +3.1 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries in Africa, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with an 8.7% share.
In South Africa, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry imports increased at an average annual rate of +25.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+33.5% per year) and Nigeria (+120.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 29%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Somalia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
