In 2021, overseas shipments of raw hides and skins of cattle increased by 29% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 31%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cattle hide and skin exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 28%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the main exporter of raw hides and skins of cattle, achieving 31% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Benin (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Libya (X tons), together creating a 43% share of total exports. Botswana (X tons), Rwanda (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Niger (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cattle hide and skin exports from South Africa stood at -1.2%. At the same time, Niger (+94.9%), Benin (+72.1%), Ghana (+65.3%), Nigeria (+62.0%), Ethiopia (+46.3%), Libya (+14.5%), Tunisia (+11.8%) and Sudan (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +94.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Botswana (-8.9%) and Rwanda (-9.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+12 p.p.), Benin (+8 p.p.), Libya (+4.9 p.p.), Tunisia (+4.8 p.p.), Sudan (+4.4 p.p.), Ghana (+4 p.p.), Niger (+3.8 p.p.) and Ethiopia (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Botswana (-4.7 p.p.) and Rwanda (-4.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Sudan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 58% share of total exports. Ghana, Benin, Tunisia, Libya, Rwanda, Niger, Botswana and Ethiopia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

Among the main exporting countries, Niger, with a CAGR of +74.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -2.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 14%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Ethiopia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sudan (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of raw hides and skins of cattle decreased by -19.4% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, posted a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 130%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

At the same time, Kenya (+13.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Africa (-8.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+83 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -32.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported raw hides and skins of cattle in Africa, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with a 1.7% share of total imports.
