Razor Market Size in Africa

The African razor market rose slightly to $X in 2021, with an increase of 4% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Razor Production in Africa

In value terms, razor production rose to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Razor Exports

Exports in Africa

For the third year in a row, Africa recorded decline in overseas shipments of razors, which decreased by -15.5% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, razor exports declined to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -34.3% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Egypt was the major exporter of razors in Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 74% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons) and Kenya (X tons), together constituting a 20% share of total exports. Senegal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of razors. At the same time, Senegal (+49.5%), Kenya (+27.1%) and South Africa (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +49.5% from 2012-2021. While the share of Kenya (+4.3 p.p.) and Senegal (+3.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Egypt (-2.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest razor supplier in Africa, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 2.4% share.

In Egypt, razor exports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+2.2% per year) and Kenya (+24.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Razor Imports

Imports in Africa

Razor imports reduced to X tons in 2021, approximately mirroring 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 19%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, razor imports amounted to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Algeria (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) were the major importers of razors in 2021, resulting at approx. 16% and 14% of total imports, respectively. South Africa (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 7.2% share, followed by Ghana (6.9%). Tanzania (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Angola (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Libya (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +30.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest razor importing markets in Africa were Algeria ($X), Morocco ($X) and South Africa ($X), together accounting for 47% of total imports. Ghana, Egypt, Angola, Tunisia, Tanzania, Cote d'Ivoire, Nigeria, Libya, Kenya and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +29.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 5.9% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 7% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+9.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
