Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +22.7% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, reclaimed rubber imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 48%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) represented the major importer of reclaimed rubber in Africa, making up 87% of total import. Cabo Verde (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +68.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest reclaimed rubber importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Senegal ($X), together accounting for 55% of total imports.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +76.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 2.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
