The African refrigerated show-cases market fell to $X in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. The total consumption indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -4.1% against 2019 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Refrigerated Show-Cases Production in Africa

In value terms, refrigerated show-cases production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 66%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa

Refrigerated show-cases exports shrank to X units in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021 figures. Total exports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +78.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 81% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, refrigerated show-cases exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 61%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa (X units) and Swaziland (X units) represented roughly 84% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X units), mixing up a 12% share of total exports. Tunisia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Swaziland (with a CAGR of +19.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest refrigerated show-cases supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Swaziland ($X), together accounting for 95% of total exports.

Egypt, with a CAGR of +20.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep setback. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per unit), while Swaziland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of refrigerated show-caseses imported in Africa reduced modestly to X units, approximately reflecting the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +29.2% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 44%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, refrigerated show-cases imports contracted to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +27.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the key importing country with an import of about X units, which finished at 29% of total imports. Morocco (X units) held an 8.1% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mozambique (6.2%), Egypt (5.5%) and Ghana (5.4%). The following importers - Algeria (X units), Botswana (X units), Kenya (X units), Libya (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Tunisia (X units) and Nigeria (X units) - together made up 22% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to refrigerated show-cases imports into South Africa stood at +7.7%. At the same time, Ghana (+28.0%), Botswana (+18.6%), Cote d'Ivoire (+10.2%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+9.4%), Morocco (+5.6%), Tunisia (+4.2%), Mozambique (+2.7%) and Egypt (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +28.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kenya (-3.6%), Algeria (-4.0%), Libya (-5.0%) and Nigeria (-5.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+8.9 p.p.), Ghana (+4.7 p.p.) and Botswana (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Nigeria (-2.8 p.p.), Kenya (-3.4 p.p.), Libya (-4.4 p.p.) and Algeria (-4.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Egypt ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 40% of total imports. Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Libya, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tunisia, Kenya, Algeria, Mozambique and Botswana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

Among the main importing countries, Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +17.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, which is down by -5.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a mild shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 25%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
