The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, relay exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 82% against the previous year. In 2022, Tunisia (X units) was the major exporter of relays, making up 85% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units), committing a 12% share of total exports. Morocco (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, dropping by -6.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 22% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while Tunisia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+8.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Relay imports declined slightly to X units in 2022, remaining constant against 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, relay imports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Tunisia (X units), distantly followed by South Africa (X units), Egypt (X units) and Algeria (X units) represented the key importers of relays, together comprising 73% of total imports. The following importers - Mozambique (X units), Morocco (X units) and Nigeria (X units) - together made up 9.4% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Tunisia (with a CAGR of +20.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest relay importing markets in Africa were Tunisia ($X), South Africa ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 67% share of total imports.
Tunisia, with a CAGR of +11.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 9.6%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+10.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
