Rice Bran Market Size in Africa

The African rice bran market shrank to $X in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -23.6% against 2017 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The total production indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -24.4% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

After four years of growth, shipments abroad of rice bran decreased by -6.1% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 75%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, rice bran exports shrank to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 68%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Malawi (X tons), distantly followed by Congo (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Liberia (X tons) were the largest exporters of rice bran, together making up 89% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Guinea (with a CAGR of +48.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Uganda ($X), Congo ($X) and Malawi ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 56% share of total exports. Tanzania, Nigeria, Guinea and Liberia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

Guinea, with a CAGR of +40.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -7.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while Malawi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, approx. X tons of rice bran were imported in Africa; jumping by 85% on the previous year. In general, imports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of rice bran, namely Morocco, Angola and South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Niger (X tons), Rwanda (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons), together achieving a 21% share of total imports. Senegal (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Angola (with a CAGR of +94.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Angola ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported rice bran in Africa, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Rwanda, with a 5.5% share.

In Angola, rice bran imports increased at an average annual rate of +98.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Morocco (+68.9% per year) and Rwanda (+87.9% per year).

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 73% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a prominent increase. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
