Paddy Rice Market Size in Africa

The African paddy rice market shrank slightly to $X in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. The total consumption indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -1.7% against 2019 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Paddy Rice Production in Africa

In value terms, paddy rice production declined slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 62%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Nigeria (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons), together accounting for 48% of total production. Tanzania, Mali, Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sierra Leone, Senegal and Ghana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Senegal (with a CAGR of +11.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average paddy rice yield in Africa reduced modestly to X tons per ha, leveling off at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 4.6% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The paddy rice harvested area shrank to X ha in 2022, which is down by -1.5% against 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to paddy rice production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, exports of paddy rice in Africa declined to X tons, reducing by -11.3% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 140%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paddy rice exports stood at $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 129% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Tanzania (X tons) and Togo (X tons) represented roughly 64% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons), together committing a 21% share of total exports. Burkina Faso (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Benin (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Ghana (with a CAGR of +96.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest paddy rice supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Burkina Faso ($X), together comprising 68% of total exports. Cameroon, Togo, Ghana and Benin lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

Among the main exporting countries, Cameroon, with a CAGR of +76.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by 41%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+2.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Paddy Rice Imports

Imports in Africa

For the third consecutive year, Africa recorded growth in overseas purchases of paddy rice, which increased by 1.2% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 71% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, paddy rice imports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Libya was the key importer of paddy rice in Africa, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 49% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Benin (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons), together making up a 38% share of total imports. Madagascar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Libya decreased at an average annual rate of -4.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uganda (+23.0%), Sudan (+21.3%), Nigeria (+16.8%), Ethiopia (+5.5%) and Benin (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +23.0% from 2012-2022. Madagascar experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Nigeria, Sudan, Uganda, Benin and Ethiopia increased by +10, +8.7, +5.9, +2.7 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest paddy rice importing markets in Africa were Libya ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Sudan ($X), together accounting for 62% of total imports. Ethiopia, Uganda, Madagascar and Benin lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

Uganda, with a CAGR of +25.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 3.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
