South Africa represented the main exporter of ride-on compaction equipment in Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X units, which was near 35% of total exports in 2022. Tunisia (X units) held a 9.6% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Botswana (7.5%), Kenya (5.4%) and Zambia (4.7%). The following exporters - Algeria (X units), Niger (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Burkina Faso (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Senegal (X units), Morocco (X units) and Cameroon (X units) - together made up 21% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to ride-on compaction equipment exports from South Africa stood at +1.8%. At the same time, Zambia (+19.0%), Algeria (+14.9%), Tunisia (+14.5%), Niger (+11.2%), Botswana (+8.2%), Kenya (+7.7%), Ethiopia (+6.7%), Cote d'Ivoire (+4.4%) and Cameroon (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +19.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Morocco (-3.8%), Burkina Faso (-6.0%) and Senegal (-7.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tunisia, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Algeria, Kenya and Niger increased by +6.9, +4.1, +3.9, +3.8, +2.8, +2.7 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest ride-on compaction equipment supplier in Africa, comprising 40% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 5.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 5.8% share.
In South Africa, ride-on compaction equipment exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+4.9% per year) and Kenya (+5.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 86%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Niger (+27.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
Ride-on compaction equipment imports expanded notably to X units in 2022, growing by 6.1% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 24%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, ride-on compaction equipment imports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X units), distantly followed by Nigeria (X units), Egypt (X units), Zimbabwe (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) represented the largest importers of ride-on compaction equipment, together mixing up 49% of total imports. Ghana (X units), Tanzania (X units), Kenya (X units), Algeria (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Burkina Faso (X units), Uganda (X units) and Morocco (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -5.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+18.2%), Zimbabwe (+14.8%), Egypt (+8.4%), Uganda (+4.3%), Ghana (+3.8%), Nigeria (+3.4%) and Burkina Faso (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +18.2% from 2012-2022. Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tanzania (-3.2%), Kenya (-4.2%), Ethiopia (-10.2%) and Algeria (-12.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zimbabwe (+5.2 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+4.9 p.p.), Egypt (+4.5 p.p.), Nigeria (+4.1 p.p.) and Ghana (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ethiopia, Algeria and South Africa saw its share reduced by -3.9%, -6.5% and -7.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Egypt ($X) and South Africa ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 32% share of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Egypt, with a CAGR of +24.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 47%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+14.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
