In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in shipments abroad of roasted coffee (not decaffeinated), when their volume decreased by -3.3% to X tons. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee exports dropped to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +50.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 31%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the largest exporter of roasted coffee (not decaffeinated), constituting 48% of total exports. Ethiopia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Morocco (10%), Kenya (7.9%), Tanzania (6.4%) and Rwanda (5%). Uganda (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Morocco (+52.0%), Ethiopia (+29.6%), Rwanda (+18.9%), Tanzania (+3.9%), Kenya (+3.1%) and Uganda (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +52.0% from 2012-2021. Ethiopia (+11 p.p.), Morocco (+10 p.p.), South Africa (+8.7 p.p.), Rwanda (+4 p.p.), Kenya (+2.1 p.p.) and Tanzania (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) emerged as the largest non-decaffeinated roasted coffee supplier in Africa, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ethiopia ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 9% share.
In South Africa, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee exports increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ethiopia (+32.9% per year) and Morocco (+44.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. Export price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee export price increased by +5.8% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 42%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($X per ton), while Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+5.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
For the fifth year in a row, Africa recorded growth in overseas purchases of roasted coffee (not decaffeinated), which increased by 9% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +81.2% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 20%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Morocco (X tons), distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), Libya (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented the key importers of roasted coffee (not decaffeinated), together making up 66% of total imports. The following importers - Namibia (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Angola (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Gambia (X tons) - together made up 24% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Gambia (with a CAGR of +51.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Morocco ($X), South Africa ($X) and Egypt ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 62% of total imports. These countries were followed by Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, Angola, Mauritius, Namibia, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal, Botswana and Gambia, which together accounted for a further 31%.
Among the main importing countries, Algeria, with a CAGR of +17.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 3.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 5.7% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
