Roasted Decaffeinated Coffee Market Size in Africa
The African roasted decaffeinated coffee market reduced slightly to $X in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. The total consumption indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +2.3% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Roasted Decaffeinated Coffee Production in Africa
In value terms, roasted decaffeinated coffee production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +1.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa
In 2022, shipments abroad of roasted decaffeinated coffee was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, showed a pronounced decline. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, roasted decaffeinated coffee exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 85% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), achieving a 9.3% share of total exports. Malawi (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of roasted decaffeinated coffee. At the same time, Malawi (+30.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +30.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-3.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+19 p.p.) and Malawi (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest roasted decaffeinated coffee supplier in Africa, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 19% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +2.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (-1.9% per year) and Malawi (+24.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Roasted Decaffeinated Coffee Imports
Imports in Africa
For the fourth year in a row, Africa recorded growth in supplies from abroad of roasted decaffeinated coffee, which increased by 53% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports showed a buoyant expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, roasted decaffeinated coffee imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Botswana prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 75% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - South Africa (X tons), Lesotho (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Libya (X tons) - together made up 16% of total imports.
Botswana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the roasted decaffeinated coffee imports, with a CAGR of +30.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritius (+14.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Namibia (-1.3%), Lesotho (-1.4%), Swaziland (-4.3%), Libya (-5.8%) and South Africa (-6.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Botswana (+62 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Namibia (-5.3 p.p.), Libya (-5.6 p.p.), Swaziland (-6 p.p.), Lesotho (-6.7 p.p.) and South Africa (-14.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Botswana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported roasted decaffeinated coffee in Africa, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 5.6% share.
In Botswana, roasted decaffeinated coffee imports increased at an average annual rate of +13.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-5.9% per year) and Mauritius (+13.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -18.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 9%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Libya (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
