Roasted Malt Market Size in Africa

In 2022, the African roasted malt market increased by 3.8% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 8.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, roasted malt production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 11%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, overseas shipments of roasted malt were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, exports showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 163%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, roasted malt exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 192%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 81% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), achieving a 16% share of total exports. Zimbabwe (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +30.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Egypt (+43.2%) and Zimbabwe (+34.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +43.2% from 2012-2022. While the share of South Africa (+39 p.p.) and Egypt (+13 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest roasted malt supplier in Africa, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +29.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+44.9% per year) and Zimbabwe (+28.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 18%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+1.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, supplies from abroad of roasted malt increased by 6.5% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, roasted malt imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +72.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 62% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 81% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons), mixing up a 5.5% share of total imports. Algeria (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to roasted malt imports into South Africa stood at +23.6%. At the same time, Mozambique (+45.8%), Botswana (+23.7%), Namibia (+19.8%) and Algeria (+17.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +45.8% from 2012-2022. South Africa (+53 p.p.), Mozambique (+5.2 p.p.), Algeria (+1.8 p.p.) and Namibia (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported roasted malt in Africa, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Algeria, with a 4.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +22.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mozambique (+42.3% per year) and Algeria (+15.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 3.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 5.7%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
