The volume of export peaked at X units in 2021, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, mill rolling roll exports rose sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X units, which was near 88% of total exports in 2022. Morocco (X units), Kenya (X units) and Tunisia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mill rolling roll exports from South Africa stood at +5.6%. At the same time, Morocco (+49.9%) and Kenya (+18.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +49.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tunisia (-10.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+8.8 p.p.), Morocco (+3.5 p.p.) and Kenya (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tunisia saw its share reduced by -7.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest mill rolling roll supplier in Africa, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 4.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 1.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -1.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kenya (+27.9% per year) and Tunisia (+0.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, surging by 2,197% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a deep reduction. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per unit), while Morocco ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+11.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of rolls for rolling mills increased by 43% to X units in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 58%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mill rolling roll imports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Egypt dominates imports structure, finishing at X units, which was near 80% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units), achieving an 8.6% share of total imports. Ethiopia (X units), Nigeria (X units) and Tanzania (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Egypt decreased at an average annual rate of -13.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ethiopia (+26.7%) and Tanzania (+9.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ethiopia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +26.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Nigeria (-7.8%) and South Africa (-8.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa and Ethiopia increased by +3 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest mill rolling roll importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Ethiopia ($X), with a combined 64% share of total imports.

Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +15.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -25.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 85% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per unit), while Egypt ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+12.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
