After five years of growth, overseas shipments of roundwood (coniferous) decreased by -6.5% to X cubic meters in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 180% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X cubic meters in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, coniferous roundwood exports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 184% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
South Africa represented the key exporter of roundwood (coniferous) in Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X cubic meters, which was approx. 82% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Madagascar (X cubic meters), committing a 13% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to coniferous roundwood exports from South Africa stood at +31.2%. At the same time, Madagascar (+66.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +66.3% from 2012-2022. South Africa (+37 p.p.) and Madagascar (+12 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest coniferous roundwood supplier in Africa, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Madagascar ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +37.5%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per cubic meter, rising by 19% against the previous year. Export price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, coniferous roundwood export price increased by +52.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per cubic meter), while South Africa stood at $X per cubic meter.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+4.8%).
Coniferous Roundwood Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2022, supplies from abroad of roundwood (coniferous) increased by 55% to X cubic meters, rising for the second year in a row after five years of decline. Overall, imports, however, faced a abrupt decrease. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, coniferous roundwood imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Egypt was the largest importing country with an import of around X cubic meters, which accounted for 41% of total imports. Algeria (X cubic meters) held a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Morocco (9.5%). The following importers - Botswana (X cubic meters), Seychelles (X cubic meters), Togo (X cubic meters), Mozambique (X cubic meters), South Africa (X cubic meters) and Rwanda (X cubic meters) - together made up 19% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Algeria (with a CAGR of +57.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported roundwood (coniferous) in Africa, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 9.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Algeria, with a 6.9% share.
In Egypt, coniferous roundwood imports shrank by an average annual rate of -7.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (-5.7% per year) and Algeria (+50.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per cubic meter, jumping by 26% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 81%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per cubic meter), while Algeria ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+13.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
