In 2021, the African rusks and toasted bread market decreased by -11% to $X for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +52.6% against 2013 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then dropped in the following year.
Production of Rusks, Toasted Bread and Similar Toasted Products in Africa
In value terms, rusks and toasted bread production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +49.7% against 2013 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports in Africa
In 2021, the amount of rusks, toasted bread and similar toasted products exported in Africa stood at X tons, approximately equating 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 61%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, rusks and toasted bread exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 137%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa represented the main exporter of rusks, toasted bread and similar toasted products in Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 74% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons) and Algeria (X tons), together mixing up a 15% share of total exports. Zambia (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to rusks and toasted bread exports from South Africa stood at -3.5%. At the same time, Zambia (+58.8%), Ethiopia (+43.9%) and Algeria (+8.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +58.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-8.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zambia (+4.2 p.p.), Algeria (+3.1 p.p.) and Ethiopia (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Egypt saw its share reduced by -7.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest rusks and toasted bread supplier in Africa, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Ethiopia, with a 2.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled +2.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (-8.6% per year) and Ethiopia (+45.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 12% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a moderate increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 221% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Rusks, Toasted Bread and Similar Toasted Products
Imports in Africa
In 2021, supplies from abroad of rusks, toasted bread and similar toasted products increased by 3.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a slight reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 8.9%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, rusks and toasted bread imports contracted modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 13%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Libya (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented roughly 24% of total imports in 2021. Namibia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 7.6% share, followed by Morocco (6.6%), Mayotte (6.3%), Mozambique (4.9%) and Botswana (4.6%). Benin (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Benin (with a CAGR of +26.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest rusks and toasted bread importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Libya ($X) and Morocco ($X), with a combined 32% share of total imports. Namibia, Mayotte, Mozambique, Mauritius, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal, Botswana, Benin, Madagascar and Kenya lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 44%.
Among the main importing countries, Senegal, with a CAGR of +32.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -3.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+12.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
