Rye Market Size in Africa

In 2022, the African rye market increased by 20% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, consumption continues to indicate a strong expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Rye Production in Africa

In value terms, rye production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production posted strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 103% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Egypt (X tons) remains the largest rye producing country in Africa, accounting for 87% of total volume. Moreover, rye production in Egypt exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Gambia (X tons), more than tenfold. Morocco (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 2.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Egypt was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Gambia (+2.9% per year) and Morocco (-0.2% per year).

The average rye yield stood at X tons per ha in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021. Overall, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the yield increased by 0.8%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, rye exports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports faced a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 222% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Kenya prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Uganda (X tons), mixing up a 4.8% share of total exports. South Africa (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Kenya was also the fastest-growing in terms of the rye exports, with a CAGR of +6.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uganda (+5.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Africa (-30.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, Kenya ($X) emerged as the largest rye supplier in Africa, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 5.1% share of total exports.

In Kenya, rye exports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-31.3% per year) and Uganda (+2.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -50.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 149% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (-0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, the amount of rye imported in Africa surged to X tons, jumping by 5,724% compared with the year before. In general, imports showed significant growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The countries with the highest levels of rye imports in 2022 were Tanzania (X tons), together accounting for 98% of total import.
