In 2021, after nine years of growth, there was decline in the African cotton bag market, when its value decreased by -4.5% to $X. The total consumption indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine years. Morocco (X tons) took a 25% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Ethiopia (8.6%) and South Africa (7.2%). The following exporters - Rwanda (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - together made up 9% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Uganda (with a CAGR of +56.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest cotton bag supplier in Africa, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 27% share of total exports. It was followed by Ethiopia, with a 4.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Tunisia amounted to +8.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+18.4% per year) and Ethiopia (+9.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 29% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 79% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, cotton bag imports in Africa was estimated at X tons, surging by 6.2% on the previous year. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 9.6% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cotton bag imports reached $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Rwanda (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Gambia (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) represented roughly 58% of total imports in 2021. Egypt (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Gambia (with a CAGR of +31.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sacks and bags of cotton in Africa, comprising 22% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Gambia ($X), with a 9.8% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with an 8.4% share.

In Morocco, cotton bag imports increased at an average annual rate of +16.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Gambia (+37.8% per year) and South Africa (+7.2% per year).
