In value terms, safety headgear exports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 135% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X units), making up a 6.2% share of total exports. Tunisia (X units) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +21.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritius (+116.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +116.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tunisia (-12.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+30 p.p.) and Mauritius (+6.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tunisia saw its share reduced by -18.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest safety headgear supplier in Africa, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with an 8.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+83.8% per year) and Tunisia (-10.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -13.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 526%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +43.7% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 46%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, safety headgear imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +99.4% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X units), distantly followed by Morocco (X units), Algeria (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Guinea (X units), Rwanda (X units) and Cameroon (X units) represented the major importers of safety headgear, together creating 57% of total imports. Ghana (X units), Egypt (X units), Madagascar (X units), Uganda (X units), Mauritius (X units) and Mozambique (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to safety headgear imports into South Africa stood at +2.8%. At the same time, Cameroon (+34.0%), Cote d'Ivoire (+21.4%), Guinea (+21.0%), Madagascar (+20.3%), Egypt (+20.2%), Rwanda (+17.6%), Ghana (+15.4%), Mauritius (+13.5%), Uganda (+9.8%), Morocco (+9.3%) and Mozambique (+6.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+4.7 p.p.), Guinea (+4.6 p.p.), Cameroon (+4 p.p.), Rwanda (+2.8 p.p.), Egypt (+2.4 p.p.), Madagascar (+2.1 p.p.), Ghana (+2 p.p.) and Morocco (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Algeria (-3.9 p.p.) and South Africa (-6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Algeria ($X), South Africa ($X) and Rwanda ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 37% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Rwanda, with a CAGR of +43.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
