In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. After four years of decline, overseas shipments of safety razor blades increased by 166% to X units in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a mild slump. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, safety razor blade exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced contraction. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Egypt (X units) represented the key exporter of safety razor blades, committing 66% of total exports. Mauritius (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by South Africa (X units). All these countries together held near 23% share of total exports. The following exporters - Uganda (X units) and Rwanda (X units) - each amounted to a 4% share of total exports.
Exports from Egypt decreased at an average annual rate of -1.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritius (+49.1%), Uganda (+11.3%) and Rwanda (+9.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +49.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-10.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mauritius and Uganda increased by +14 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest safety razor blade supplier in Africa, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 5.8% share.
In Egypt, safety razor blade exports decreased by an average annual rate of -1.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-6.2% per year) and Mauritius (+33.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 51%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Rwanda (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+10.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of safety razor blades decreased by -5.7% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 44%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, safety razor blade imports rose modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Nigeria (X units), distantly followed by Sudan (X units), Ghana (X units), Kenya (X units) and South Africa (X units) represented the key importers of safety razor blades, together mixing up 66% of total imports. The following importers - Senegal (X units), Morocco (X units), Cameroon (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Madagascar (X units), Benin (X units), Libya (X units) and Tunisia (X units) - each resulted at a 15% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Madagascar (with a CAGR of +36.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported safety razor blades in Africa, comprising 23% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 7.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria amounted to +2.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-9.4% per year) and Ghana (+10.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 38% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while Sudan (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
