The African safflower seed market contracted to $X in 2022, falling by -7.1% against the previous year. Overall, consumption saw a perceptible descent. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Safflower Seed Production in Africa
In value terms, safflower seed production contracted sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Tanzania (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together comprising 99% of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Egypt (with a CAGR of +24.0%), while production for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the production figures.
In 2022, the average yield of safflower seed in Africa declined slightly to X kg per ha, standing approx. at the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 8.4%. Over the period under review, the safflower seed yield reached the peak level at X kg per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of safflower seed were harvested in Africa; remaining relatively unchanged against 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 7.8%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa
In 2022, exports of safflower seed in Africa reduced notably to X tons, which is down by -20.1% against the year before. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 29,708% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, safflower seed exports declined modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 22,347% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Egypt (X tons), together amounting to 98% of total export.
Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the safflower seed exports, with a CAGR of +18.7% from 2012 to 2022. Egypt (+97 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) also remains the largest safflower seed supplier in Africa.
In Egypt, safflower seed exports increased at an average annual rate of +16.5% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 19% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 221% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Egypt.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Egypt amounted to -1.9% per year.
Safflower Seed Imports
Imports in Africa
After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of safflower seed decreased by -7.6% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 113%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, safflower seed imports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 98% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Libya represented the main importer of safflower seed in Africa, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 46% of total imports in 2022. South Africa (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Morocco (16%), Egypt (10%) and Algeria (4.6%). Tunisia (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to safflower seed imports into Libya stood at +33.7%. At the same time, Morocco (+56.1%), Algeria (+42.9%), Egypt (+12.2%) and South Africa (+10.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +56.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tunisia (-11.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Libya (+31 p.p.), Morocco (+15 p.p.), Algeria (+3.8 p.p.) and Tunisia (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Egypt (-8.7 p.p.) and South Africa (-22.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Libya ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported safflower seed in Africa, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Libya stood at +35.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+10.2% per year) and Morocco (+53.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 17% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 20%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+26.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
