In 2021, overseas shipments of sailboats for pleasure or sports, with or without auxiliary motor increased by 59% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 117% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sailboat exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate buoyant growth. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X units), constituting a 6.4% share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tunisia (+45.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +45.6% from 2012-2021. While the share of Tunisia (+5.9 p.p.) and South Africa (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest sailboat supplier in Africa, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 26% share of total exports.
In South Africa, sailboat exports increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed moderate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 87%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while South Africa stood at $X per unit.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-0.9%).

Imports in Africa
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of sailboats for pleasure or sports, with or without auxiliary motor increased by 25% to X units in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 151% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sailboat imports rose notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 74% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Mayotte was the key importing country with an import of about X units, which accounted for 38% of total imports. Zambia (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Nigeria (X units), Tunisia (X units), Algeria (X units) and Seychelles (X units). All these countries together held approx. 38% share of total imports. South Africa (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Cabo Verde (X units) and Ghana (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Mayotte increased at an average annual rate of +24.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zambia (+48.4%), Algeria (+34.3%), Seychelles (+25.5%), Tunisia (+17.1%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.8%) and Cabo Verde (+5.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +48.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-2.2%), South Africa (-12.3%) and Nigeria (-18.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mayotte (+32 p.p.), Zambia (+15 p.p.), Algeria (+4.7 p.p.), Seychelles (+4.2 p.p.) and Tunisia (+4.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -10.9% and -40.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest sailboat importing markets in Africa were Seychelles ($X), South Africa ($X) and Tunisia ($X), with a combined 74% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Cabo Verde, Algeria, Nigeria, Ghana, Mayotte, Zambia and Democratic Republic of the Congo, which together accounted for a further 16%.
Algeria, with a CAGR of +41.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, declining by -10.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 373% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Seychelles ($X per unit), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+41.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
