Sails Market Size in Africa

The African sails market contracted to $X in 2022, shrinking by -3.8% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -7.7% against 2019 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sails production declined modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -7.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Sails exports soared to X tons in 2022, rising by 41% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sails exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Tunisia (X tons) was the largest exporter of sails, committing 70% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), achieving a 28% share of total exports.

Tunisia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sails exports, with a CAGR of +11.1% from 2012 to 2022. South Africa (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tunisia increased by +44 percentage points.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest sails supplier in Africa, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 29% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -29.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tunisia amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-2.5%).

Imports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of sails imported in Africa contracted significantly to X tons, shrinking by -28.8% on the previous year. Overall, imports saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 45%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sails imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 62%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Botswana (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the largest importers of sails in 2022, finishing at approx. 28% and 21% of total imports, respectively. Namibia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Mozambique (12%), Mauritania (7.4%) and Swaziland (4.9%). Seychelles (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mauritania (with a CAGR of +72.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest sails importing markets in Africa were Seychelles ($X), South Africa ($X) and Mauritania ($X), with a combined 41% share of total imports.

Mauritania, with a CAGR of +66.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -29.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 49%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Seychelles ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+8.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
