Preserved salmon exports declined to X tons in 2021, falling by -8.9% on the year before. Overall, exports showed a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 82%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preserved salmon exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 67%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the main exporter of salmon (prepared or preserved), achieving 83% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), constituting a 12% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -16.8% from 2012 to 2021. Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Morocco (+9.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -10.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest preserved salmon supplier in Africa, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 5% share of total exports.

In South Africa, preserved salmon exports increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 122% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Morocco amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+22.0%).

Imports in Africa

After three years of decline, overseas purchases of salmon (prepared or preserved) increased by 23% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 102% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, preserved salmon imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 83%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Libya was the major importer of salmon (prepared or preserved) in Africa, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 56% of total imports in 2021. South Africa (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mauritius (5.2%) and Egypt (5%). Namibia (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to preserved salmon imports into Libya stood at +17.8%. At the same time, Egypt (+43.4%), Morocco (+39.0%), Mozambique (+38.0%) and Mauritius (+29.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +43.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-4.2%), Namibia (-6.2%) and South Africa (-14.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Libya (+44 p.p.), Egypt (+4.8 p.p.), Mauritius (+4.8 p.p.) and Morocco (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Namibia (-2.7 p.p.) and South Africa (-37.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest preserved salmon importing markets in Africa were Libya ($X), South Africa ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 62% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Namibia, Mauritius, Mozambique, Morocco and Zimbabwe, which together accounted for a further 22%.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of +56.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
