For the fourth consecutive year, Africa recorded growth in overseas shipments of saturated acyclic hydrocarbons, which increased by 0.1% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, faced a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 184%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, saturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports declined modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a precipitous shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 142%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the key exporter of saturated acyclic hydrocarbons, making up 75% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), making up a 15% share of total exports. The following exporters - Kenya (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) - together made up 8.1% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to saturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports from South Africa stood at -12.0%. At the same time, Cameroon (+22.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cameroon emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +22.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kenya (-11.0%), Nigeria (-24.1%) and Egypt (-26.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+44 p.p.), Kenya (+2.3 p.p.) and Cameroon (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Egypt (-3.6 p.p.) and Nigeria (-12 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest saturated acyclic hydrocarbons supplier in Africa, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 6.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 3.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -11.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nigeria (-35.8% per year) and Kenya (-14.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 67% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cameroon ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of saturated acyclic hydrocarbons were imported in Africa; which is down by -14% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a notable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 302%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, saturated acyclic hydrocarbons imports rose notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 97% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) represented roughly 49% of total imports in 2022. Nigeria (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Tunisia (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Algeria (X tons). All these countries together held near 36% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Zambia (with a CAGR of +20.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest saturated acyclic hydrocarbons importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Nigeria ($X), together comprising 67% of total imports.

South Africa, with a CAGR of +18.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 31% against the previous year. Import price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, saturated acyclic hydrocarbons import price increased by +176.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 89% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
