South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of scissors and tailor shears. The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 4.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Rwanda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Rwanda (+5.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, purchases abroad of scissors and tailor shears decreased by -6.4% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports saw a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 149% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, scissors and tailor shears imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a measured expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 92% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In terms of the main importing countries, Senegal, with a CAGR of +40.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 26% against the previous year. Import price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, scissors and tailor shears import price increased by +46.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 38%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
