In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of seats for motor vehicles, when their volume decreased by -22.2% to X units. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed modest growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, vehicle seat exports dropped notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 73%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Tunisia (X units) was the key exporter of seats for motor vehicles, committing 61% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units) and Morocco (X units), together creating a 35% share of total exports. Algeria (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to vehicle seat exports from Tunisia stood at +1.1%. At the same time, Morocco (+97.2%) and Algeria (+42.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +97.2% from 2012-2022. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Morocco (+6.8 p.p.) and Algeria (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Tunisia (-2.8 p.p.) and South Africa (-5.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest vehicle seat supplier in Africa, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 9.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Tunisia totaled +10.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+2.4% per year) and Morocco (+113.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, picking up by 5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 35%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+8.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of seats for motor vehicles, when their volume increased by 15% to X units. In general, imports showed pronounced growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 141%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, vehicle seat imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +44.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In 2022, Egypt (X units) represented the largest importer of seats for motor vehicles, making up 55% of total imports. South Africa (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Morocco (10%) and Mauritius (7.8%). The following importers - Algeria (X units), Tunisia (X units) and Kenya (X units) - together made up 8% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to vehicle seat imports into Egypt stood at +3.0%. At the same time, Morocco (+7.2%), Tunisia (+6.2%), Kenya (+5.8%), Algeria (+5.4%), South Africa (+4.6%) and Mauritius (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +7.2% from 2012-2022. Morocco (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Egypt saw its share reduced by -3.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), Egypt ($X) and South Africa ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 79% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Morocco, with a CAGR of +14.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 9.4% against the previous year. Import price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, vehicle seat import price increased by +99.1% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
